About Mike Meskel
Mike is a native of Portland, Oregon. He attended My. Hood Community College before he graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor's of Music Education in 2009. He graduated from the Graduate Teacher Education Program at Portland State's Graduate School of Education. He student taught at Union High School. After student teaching Meskel was hired to teach at Rosemont Ridge Middle School in West Linn, OR. In 2011 Meskel was happy to accept a position teaching at Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver, WA. Meskel is a passionate musician who is excited about his passion of teaching secondary instrumental music. His primary instrument is saxophone. As a performing musician, Meskel has had the opportunity to travel all over the country and play with many notable musicians including Darrell Grant, Chris Vadala, Kurt Elling, Duffy Jackson, Kevin Mahogony and Jamey Aebersold. Meskel studied under Scott Hall, Robert Crowell and Bryan Dickerson as an undergraduate student. He spent time in the Mt. Hood Community College Jazz Band, the Portland State University Jazz Band and was part of the International Association for Jazz Education's All-Star Big Band. Meskel has been a performing free-lance musician since the age of 16 and specializes in jazz and funk music.
Meskel is proud to serve in the United States Army Reserve. He is a Staff Sergeant in the 204th Army Band.
Meskel strives for balance in his life by spending time every day working on music, working on academics and spending time with hobbies. Meskel enjoys being outdoors, gardening and going on pointless walks without a destination. Meskel is an avid athlete and martial artist, practicing strength training and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
